Harper Ray is a black woman owned and operated fashion jewelry brand founded on the the basis of boosting women's confidence through self purchasing. Founder, Gillian Bradley's, childhood passion for arts and crafts would soon enough evolve into a 7-figure business.
Gillian's knack for jewelry started in Mr. Leo's jewelry class at Harrison High School, where she learned to saw & mould metals. She began wearing her designs and classmates began asking her to make pieces for them. And she would, for a small fee. As the side hustle gained a little traction, Gillian decided it was time to name her new jewelry brand. She wrote down a list of people and phrases that were important to her and Dr. James Harper was the name that stuck out the most.
He was professionally known as Dr. James Harper but to Gillian & her sister Shelbie, he was just their fun "Pop Pop." Her late grandfather would accompany them to Daddy-Daughter dances (since Gillian & Shelbie would always fight over their dad), and always had a cold, glass Crush bottle waiting for them by his pool.
Pop Pop was born in Washington D.C. and attended Dunbar High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the army and rose to the rank of Sergeant after winning numerous awards. He graduated from Howard University School of Medicine in 1962 and completed his residency at the University of Washington, Seattle in 1965. He later moved to Detroit and became one of the first black anesthesiologists in the state of Michigan. Gillian wanted her business to reflect his hard work and honor his legacy, so naming the busiss after him was the only thing that felt right.
Gillian got to work making custom bracelets for everybody she could on Michigan State's campus. When she graduated in 2018 she decided to dedicate all of her time to the cause and see what could come of Harper Ray. She hired her bestie, Tabinda, as her social media manager. The more they promoted the brand the larger the sales grew. In October 2018, Gillian opened her first physical location in a 493 square feet office space. Harper Ray went on to occupy a few more office spaces over the next few years, each one bigger than the last.
On September 25, 2021 Harper Ray and the team made their biggest move yet into a storefront in Southfield, Michigan. The space is used to sell their fly jewels, host special events for their community of #HarperBaes, and also give back to the community.
Harper Ray's goal is to shake up the jewelry industry. Today most jewelry is marketed towards men to buy for women. The idea that the only time a woman can get jewelry is when a man gifts it to her is over. At Harper Ray you'll find affordable and glamorous jewelry for the bold and confidant woman. Basking in your fly and feminine energy is what being a #HarperBae is all about! You deserve to shine. Harper Ray will continue to take over, one princess at a time!
